Abstract
Purpose: We analyzed terms used as keywords of papers published by The Korean Ophthalmic Optics Society and The Korean Society of Vision Science to identify the current use and inaccuracies in optometric terminology.

Methods: A total of 4,145 keywords of papers published by The Korean Ophthalmic Optics Society from 1996 to 2019 and 2,636 keywords of papers published by The Korean Society of Vision Science from 1999 to 2019 were analyzed. Based on the problems pointed out in the Standardization of Korean Academic Terminologies project led by the Korean Association of Academic Societies, the current state of the use of optometric terminology was investigated.

Results: An analysis of terms used as keywords of papers published by The Korean Ophthalmic Optics Society and The Korean Society of Vision Science revealed the mixed use of spacing, varied forms of Korean terms, varied forms of loanwords, and use of different words from related fields, in that order of frequency. The field of optometry in Korea requires standardization of terminology.

Conclusions: Standard terminology is often key to efficient communication of specific concepts in every academic field. An incoherent use of terms, such as varying terms representing the same concept, can impede efficient communication and negatively impact development in the field. Therefore, for efficient communication, standardization of terminology is required, and opinions of experts should be fully considered in the process.
